Cyclops Radar Reflectors -- A Brief History

Cyclops reflectors have an impressive and historical past. Designed by the British Ministry of Defense for the British Admiralty, Cyclops then named the "magic ball", first came to light during the Falkland Wars.

When deadly Exocet missiles were targeted on British ships the Ministry of Defense quickly realized the potential the "magic ball" reflector had as a decoy. The return signal to the enemy's on board radar was so strong that by suspending the reflector beneath British helicopters, the enemy missiles mistook the strong constant blip as the intended target and locked mistakenly on to the "magic ball". In this way the missile was guided safely away from its intended target where, fuel exhausted it fell harmlessly into the sea!

Later years took the development of this amazing product to greater heights, redesigned specifically for power, sail and commercial use for the standard marine radar frequency, the X band, 3 cm wave length at 9.4GHz.

This newly named Cyclops with its di-electric lens technology, works similar to a cats eye, focusing the incoming energy to the rear of the eye through a lens, and reflecting back a strong signal.

With its new size and its aerodynamic weather proof housing this passive system became the first reflector ever to be certified "Type Approved" to the current IMO (International Maritime Organization) and ISO (International Standards Organization) specifications, requiring no maintenance and always "on the job".

The Cyclops 3 is the reflector of choice for those that expect standards that go well beyond the capabilities of conventional corner or fender shaped reflectors.
